Dementia And Memory Loss Assessments

Specialist assessment for memory problems, cognitive decline, and suspected dementia.

Memory problems can have multiple causes, including dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), depression, medication effects, or other medical conditions.

We provide structured memory assessments led by consultant psychiatrists to identify the cause and recommend appropriate next steps.

Common signs of memory and cognitive decline

Assessment may be appropriate if you or a family member are experiencing:

. Memory loss affecting daily life
. Repeating questions or forgetting recent events
. Difficulty finding words or following conversations
. Confusion about time, place, or routine
. Changes in behaviour, mood, or personality
. Difficulty managing finances, medication, or daily tasks

Understanding dementia and memory disorders

Dementia is a group of conditions caused by progressive changes in the brain. It affects memory, language, reasoning, and daily functioning.

Common types include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and mixed dementia.

Not all memory problems are dementia. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, or medication side effects can also affect memory and concentration.

A clinical assessment is required to determine the underlying cause.

Treatment and management

Dementia is a progressive condition and cannot be reversed. However, early diagnosis allows for appropriate management.

Treatment may include:

  • Medication to support cognitive function (where appropriate)
  • Management of contributing conditions
  • Practical strategies to support daily functioning
  • Planning for future care and support

Where memory problems are due to other causes, treatment will focus on the underlying condition.

Over the years, I have worked with a number of key workers, clinicians, and psychotherapists. Living with my mental health challenges has been extremely difficult, particularly as my needs are complex, and I have often felt that I was not easy to support.
