Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services

Oxford Psychiatry Group provides specialist mental health assessment and support for children and adolescents, recognising the importance of early understanding and intervention. Our CAMHS service works with young people and their families to explore emotional, behavioural and developmental concerns in a supportive and age-appropriate way. Assessments are carried out by experienced clinicians, with careful attention to safeguarding, developmental context and family dynamics.

This page provides an overview of the conditions we commonly assess and support. Each condition has its own dedicated page with more detailed information.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD in children and adolescents can affect attention, impulse control, activity levels and emotional regulation. Young people may struggle with concentration, organisation, following instructions or managing emotions, particularly in school settings. These difficulties can impact learning, friendships and self-confidence.

Our CAMHS ADHD assessments follow NICE guidelines and include a detailed developmental history, symptom evaluation across settings, and input from parents or carers where appropriate. When ADHD is diagnosed, we provide clear recommendations which may include behavioural strategies, school support guidance and medication where clinically indicated.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism in children and young people can present as differences in social communication, sensory sensitivities, strong routines or intense interests. Some children experience distress in social or school environments, while others may struggle with emotional regulation or change. Early understanding can make a significant difference to wellbeing and development.

Oxford Psychiatry Group provides autism assessments using recognised diagnostic frameworks, with careful feedback for families. Post-diagnostic support focuses on understanding the child’s needs, supporting emotional wellbeing, and helping families and schools make appropriate adjustments.

Anxiety

Anxiety in children and adolescents may present differently to adults. Symptoms can include excessive worry, physical complaints such as stomach aches or headaches, school refusal, separation anxiety, panic symptoms or sleep difficulties. Anxiety can significantly affect a young person’s confidence and daily functioning.

Our CAMHS team provides thorough assessments to understand the nature of a child’s anxiety and contributing factors. Treatment recommendations may include psychological therapies, family-based approaches and practical strategies to help young people feel safe, supported and more able to manage anxious feelings.

Behavioural Issues

Behavioural difficulties in children often reflect underlying emotional, developmental or environmental challenges rather than intentional misbehaviour. Difficulties may include aggression, oppositional behaviour, emotional outbursts or difficulties following rules. These behaviours can place strain on families and school environments.

At Oxford Psychiatry Group, we assess behavioural concerns within the wider context of the child’s development, emotional health and family circumstances. Our recommendations focus on understanding the causes of behaviour, supporting emotional regulation, and helping families and schools respond in consistent, supportive ways.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD in children and adolescents involves intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours or mental rituals performed to reduce anxiety. Young people may feel distressed or ashamed by these experiences, and symptoms can interfere with school, friendships and family life.

Our CAMHS service offers specialist assessment for OCD and related conditions. Treatment recommendations are based on NICE guidance and typically include evidence-based psychological therapies, with medication considered where appropriate. We work closely with families to ensure young people feel understood, supported and empowered.
