Talking Therapies
Talking therapies offer a safe, supportive space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences with a trained professional. They can help you understand patterns in your emotions and behaviour, develop healthier coping strategies, and feel more in control of your mental wellbeing. At Oxford Psychiatry Group, our talking therapies are evidence-based, person-centred, and tailored to your individual needs.
We understand that starting therapy can feel daunting. Our clinicians work at your pace, creating a respectful and non-judgemental environment where you feel heard, understood and supported. Therapy can be helpful on its own or alongside psychiatric care and medication, depending on what feels right for you.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is one of the most widely used and researched talking therapies in the UK. It focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and how unhelpful thinking patterns can keep difficulties going. CBT helps you recognise these patterns and develop practical strategies to manage them more effectively.
CBT is commonly used for anxiety, depression, OCD, phobias, panic, stress and low self-esteem. Sessions are structured and goal-focused, with techniques you can practise between appointments. Many people find CBT empowering, as it provides tools they can continue to use long after therapy ends.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a specialist therapy designed to help people process distressing or traumatic experiences. It works by helping the brain reprocess memories that may be “stuck” and continue to trigger emotional distress in the present. EMDR does not require you to go into detail about the trauma if that feels too difficult.
This therapy is commonly used for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma-related anxiety, and distress linked to past experiences. Many people notice a reduction in emotional intensity and an increased sense of calm and control as therapy progresses.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on understanding how past experiences, relationships and unconscious patterns influence how you feel and behave today. It offers a space to explore deeper emotional themes, recurring difficulties and relationship patterns that may feel confusing or overwhelming.
This approach can be particularly helpful if you feel “stuck,” experience long-standing emotional difficulties, or want a deeper understanding of yourself. Psychodynamic therapy is usually open-ended and reflective, allowing insight and change to develop gradually over time.
Executive Function Coaching
Executive function coaching is a practical, supportive approach that focuses on organisation, planning, time management, prioritisation and emotional regulation. It is often helpful for people with ADHD, autism, burnout, or those struggling with work or daily demands.
Coaching is action-focused and collaborative. Together, you and your coach work on realistic strategies that fit your life, helping you feel more organised, confident and in control. Many people find this approach complements therapy or medication particularly well.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a structured therapy that focuses on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and mindfulness. It is especially helpful for people who experience intense emotions, rapid mood changes, self-destructive behaviours, or difficulties in relationships.
DBT teaches practical skills to help you manage overwhelming feelings, cope during moments of crisis, and improve communication and relationships. It is a compassionate, skills-based approach that focuses on both acceptance and change.
